Special features of tissue-sparing spinal surgery

In conventional microsurgery, the surgical intervention is carried out openly or with the endoscope dorsally (from behind) in the area of the spine. Here, the surgeon dissects sensitive nerve structures to access the spinal canal. This can lead to nerve injuries or adhesions in the affected area.

In contrast to this conventional method, which is prone to complications, we do not perform this minimally (most) invasive spinal surgery procedure from behind, but laterally (sideways) through the existing nerve exit hole. The ligamentum flavum (stabilizing ligaments between the vertebrae) is spared during the lateral intervention and remains completely intact. There are no dreaded postoperative instabilities like with the rear access! The aim of the procedure is to endoscopically remove the disc tissue that is causing the pain in order to ensure decompression of the nerve tissue.

In addition, general anesthesia is not required during the 30-45 minute operation. Minimally invasive endoscopic spine surgery is tissue-sparing, safer and postoperative complications such as nerve injuries with neurological disorders or infections are largely avoided.
